Pressing

The "pressing" defense, as the name suggests, is the "hustling" defense that exists in handball. It characterized in that the defenders made a single defense to their direct opponent, man to man, anywhere in the field. In addition, this defensive system is as best works and adopts the basic principle of the defense: the interception and steal of the ball.

Therefore, it is the most appropriate way of working both in attack and defense at ages early, especially in the categories of “benjamin” and “alevin”, although it is advisable individual defense exercises in all categories and at any age. However, it is very difficult to see that a team makes this defense in adulthood, its use is limited to desperate situations in which the team is looking for a quick steal to score as soon as possible . Although there are different opinions about it in reality: rating about a "courageous" defense, while others call it a "suicide" defense.

In any case, from Initiation Handball encourage all coaches, and especially the  initiation teams, including the work of "pressing" in their programming, because from our point of view, is the best way for children to work as important as the individual defense and steal the ball. Moreover, as advice when to work it is important that the defending player does not lose the vision both his direct opponent and the ball, because in this way will increase the chances of successfully making pass steals.

Then, to work it, we will expose two very simple exercises:

· Exercise 1

By trios, a player with ball attacks, another defends and the third pass the ball. It is stealing the ball pass between the attacker and the pin (which is still on the site). To do this, the attacking player will have to make forward runs without the ball continued to receive it from the pin. For its part, the defender will have to be placed in a position such that at any time to see where his attacker is and where the ball is, for cut the pass pin-attacker and vice versa. After 1 minute of work, the roles are exchanged.

· Exercise 2

In this exercise three attackers with a ball are placed along the halfway line, and 3 defenders, each facing direct attacker, 1 to 2 meters in front . The exercise is to try to reach a goal by forward runs and passes by attackers to get a comfortable shot and get score a goal. Meanwhile, defenders will have to avoid trying to cut those passes and stealing the ball. It is important not to lose back at his opponent, that is, you always know where he is and where the ball is. Defenders may make changes opponent if it’s easier in certain situations.
* Variations: Prohibit the bouncing or not the attackers / increase the number of both attackers and defenders / stop or not to make fault.

We hope this entry about "pressing" you have found interesting and that you practice regardless of age and category where your players are, because may be you required of it a lot of times. Thank you very much and greetings!

Pressing

3:2:1 Defense

The defensive system 3: 2: 1 is composed of three defensive lines. The first line, located about 6-7 meters, consists of 3 players (central defender and two wings); the second line is composed of the two back defenders, about 8-9 meters; and the third line is composed as a single player, the most advanced, which is situated in the center of defense and in 10-11 meters. Is perhaps the most "visual" and beautiful defense that can be made of all that exist, later explained why.

This defensive system is one of the most complicated to make, but practicing and training them properly can be very effective against any type of team. It requires great concentration and coordination among the six components that form it. Perhaps because this is a defense that is usually done in experience and in adult age categories, rather than on young categories. However, as noted, it all depends on how much and how it works.

Its main feature and difference from the other defensive systems is the great physical involvement and great coordination required by the defenders. There must be continual shifts forward and back, especially the 2nd and 3rd line, and frequent sideshifts of the 1st line. If done properly, continuously it has to form alignments between wing defenders, back defenders and advanced defender (an arrow), but depends on the position where the ball is located. In addition, the position of offensive pivot shouldn’t be a problem for the defense to keep the same structure. With arms raised, all have to cut the pass lines.

Coming up next we show 2 exercises to work this type of defense:

· Exercise 1

In the middle of the area (left or right) three defenders placed and 3 attackers on the wing, side and playmaker positions, and a stationary pivot in the back area. The exercise, specific for defensive work shifts depending on the ball, consists of avoid that attackers can arrive to six meters or they can pass to the pivot. To do this, the 3 defenders will have to make continuous lateral movement both as forward and backward, depending on whether their direct opponent has the ball or not, to cut off the passing lines and to avoid that attackers can get their end.
* Variations: introduce a defender pivot / let the pivot can be moved by 6 meters / no goal to attack if I my direct defender touches me.

· Exercise 2

This exercise is similar to the previous one, but already introducing all the components of  the attack and defense (6x6). With continuous circulation of the ball, the purpose of the exercise is to correct errors that occur in the alignment and positions of the defenders, since the position of each is different depending on where the ball is located. The cut of the pass line through the pivot is key, so he can move along the whole line of 6 meters. When the defense control all the positions and movements, the attacking team will shoot on goal.
* Variations: move the ball slower to faster / prohibit the bouncing or not / remove or not the central defender of the pivot.

We hope you there liked this post about  3: 2: 1 defense. Next, on the pressing will be the last of the defensive systems. Thank you very much and you don’t doubt to comment us!

Defensa 3:2:1

Defense in numerical superiority and inferiority

In previous posts we saw how to attack well in a situation of superiority or inferiority. In this post we will see how to defend before such situations, both when our team has a player more on court, as when we have a player less.

Defense in numerical inferiority

One of the premises that you have to consider when you are at a numerical inferiority situation is trying to mark us as few goals as possible, as we mark it is much more difficult. Therefore, the first thing that have to think the players after completing the attack is to make the defensive withdrawal as quickly as possible because the offensive team will attack as quickly as possible to have more ball possession in those two minutes of superiority, and to do a more favorable partial.

Once our defense is already formed, it can act in two  different ways: or close to 6 meters, or make continual shifts out to try to cause failure of the attacker. We are more in favor of the second option. Defenders have to act collectively, with continuing tiltings depending on the ball, but made numerous exits to 8-9 meters to try to dissuade the attacker and cause failure. Obviously the best result would be the ball steal, but although it is difficult is not impossible. Moreover, keep in mind that pivot is in 6 meters line, so to these exits must ensure that the partner next defends this pass to the offensive pivot.

Lastly, another possible situation that occurs often, is try if there is a shot of the opposing team, it’s important that this shot be made by the player whose definition to goal is more limited. This situation usually require a lot of goalkeepers to their defenders, as there are clearly more probability to shot, but that this is where the goalkeeper feel safer.

Defense in numerical superiority

Defense in numerical superiority is a situation usually worked few in teams, because "it is assumed" that the attacking team should not be able to score a goal to be a very complicated situation. Therefore, a goal in numerical inferiority is considered a failure of the defense, and usually is caused by an excess of relaxation and confidence from that.

As noted above, how to deal with these situations is different, but the purpose of the defending players must be stealing the ball, and the sooner the better. Therefore, it is best to do an "open" defense, pressing the first line or making a mixed defense to their best player or who can score from long distances. Another aspect to consider is that it is often offensive players make continuous crossings and frequent circulation by 6 meters. Therefore, defenders will have to carry out many opponent changes, and be attentive to player circulations, especially the wings. To defend in these situations is not complicated, but it requires a lot of concentration and communication between the players.

It is rare that in a handball match there aren’t exclusions that produce these situations with more or less players, so it is advisable to work on them with our team. We hope it can help you! Greetings!

Saludos!

5:1 “mixed” defense and 5:1 in “flotation”

In the previous post we talked about the system traditional 5:1 and today we will see two more possibilities of this defensive system: 5:1 mixed and 5: 1 in “flotation”.

What is the defensive system called 5: 1 mixed?
This system contist of the placement of 5 players on the first line of defense, ie the closer to the goal itself and a player, the advanced standing on the second line of defense making an individual marking an attacker specifically, which will be responsible exclusively. This individual marking is usually performed on a player's first offensive line for his individual capacity to organize the game and move the ball or because of their effectiveness in foreign shoot.

And, 5:1 in flotation?
This other possibilty of 5:1 defensive system is the placement of 5 defenders in the first defensive line, just as the two previous variants, and advanced placement in one of the back areas of the attack. This system of greater numerical placement on one side of attack, mainly aims hinder comfortable ball movement and partially cancel the shares of the back on which is the advanced and winger on that side in particular and even pivot if placed on that side.

The best choice of these three possibilities depends on the characteristics of game opponent team in question. Importantly, in each teammates communication is essential (as in any defensive system), emphasizing communication with the advanced who players to the first line of defense should advise him if the pivote comes out to block him because the player will back and generally will not see him.

We hope you enjoyed the post and we look forward to the next!

We leave you a video about some exercises to practice the tactic in handball

Positional 5:1 defense

Today we present a brief post about the open defense system called 5:1. This system is very used by teams, from initiation to high performance. The 5:1 positional also known as 5:1 in area or 5:1 traditional.

Why is so used?
mainly because this system has the main advantages of closed systems (has a 5 players creating defensive "wall") but with features and benefits of open systems (for the work of defending located on the second line of defense preventing movement of the ball ).

What is this defensive system?
This system consists of placing 5 players on the first line of defense and one player on the second line which is known as advanced. This player is usually fast or large which helps to hinder the movement of the ball and intercept the ball as many times.

In this system, all players involved in your area, ie not change regardless defensive position that attackers maked crosses, swaps or circulations. However, it is also characterized, as defensive sitemas closed by reciprocal teammates support.

Positional 5:1 in initiation handball
It is important to work this defensive system from the base category because, as we said before, has the advantages of both types of defensive systems (closed and open). As working this defensive system, we practice the fundamentals of defense: supports between teammates and the pressure to the opponent player to hinder or prevent the easy movement of the ball and therefore their facilities to goal attack.

We hope you have enjoyed this post about defensive system as used in our sport and do not miss the next one will be about two other ways to make a 5:1!

Defensa 5:1 posicional
