Range of motion

Range of motion is the quality that, based on mobility, joint and muscle elasticity, allows the maximum travel of joints in different positions, allowing the subject to perform actions that require agility and dexterity. It can be dynamic or static.

Why improving the range of motion?

Improvement of the range of motion allows us to:
  • Limit, reduce, and prevent the number of injuries, not just muscle, but also joint.
  • Make easier the learning of mechanics.
  • Increase the chances of other physical as the strength, speed and endurance capabilities (an antagonist muscle that extends easily allows more freedom and increases the efficiency of the movement).
  • Ensure the amplitude of specific technical gestures and movements more natural.
  • Perform and perfect learned movements; Save the displacement and repeats.
  • Scroll faster when travel speed depends on the frequency and amplitude of stride.
  • Reach the limits of some body region without deterioration of this and in an active way.
  • Increase the physical relaxation.

Classification of the different manifestations of the amplitude.

According to the mechanical conditions in which it is manifested:
  • Amplitude Dynamics: expressed as a move action.
  • Static amplitude: expressed in a situation of no movement.

According to the origin or cause of the forces that encourage their expression:
  • Active amplitude: when the origin of the force comes from the activation of the neuromuscular system.
  • Amplitude passive: when is expressed using exogenous forces.

Another mode of classification, is attending the necessary degree of development to improve the performance in this area:
  • "Absolute" width: maximum  mobility articular and muscular elongation.
  • Amplitude "of work": degree of amplitude necessary in the execution of a movement or sporting gesture.
  • "Residual" amplitude: degree of amplitude, always greater than the working, that the athlete should be developed to avoid limitations that hinder coordination, the expressiveness of a stroke or injury.

Determinants factors
·         Age
·         Biological Sex
·         Time of day
·         Neuromuscular fatigue
·         Temperature conditions
·         Emotional situation
·         Low specific coordinative ability

Application to sport

Handball is a sport of "openness" (very large number of actions technomotion and/or application situations very varied, changing and, therefore, predictable and anticipables), so it will be necessary to develop a broader "residual" (explained above), to ensure adaptation to mechanical demands much more varied, less predictable, with a lesser chance of absolute automation. On the other hand, the manifestation of the predominant extent type is the "dynamic-active", therefore will be which should attract greater training load and the main objective for his direct relationship with competitive performance.

In relation to the prevention of injuries, a greater difference between the capabilities to the extent of dynamic-active character and the static, passive and active, the risk of injury is greater. Therefore, must be kept near the limits of ones and others.

Finally, and in conclusion, it is advisable to make some considerations on the relationship between the amplitude of the movement and the postural, and the conditions of force:

In many specific manifestations of mobility active, the limiting factor is not any structural or functional capacity of amplitude factor, but the lack of the necessary force, preventing the involved body segment, to take all the maximum joint.

The Resistance

It is the ability to support the physical, techniques and tactics demands established by a particular system of play during the match and throughout the competition.

Objectives of resistance training

Handball is characterized by intensity changes depending on the game system and the behavior of the adversary. In this context, the general objectives to be achieved by the resistance training are:

1. Supporting both physical and psychological exhaustion during an action game, the game and throughout the season.

2. Accelerate the recovery process from the lows of rate, between micropauses and macropausas the game, and between practices and games.

3. To maintain the optimum level of performance of the player in the implementation of technical gesture and decision-making.

Clasification of resistance
Now a series of classifications of resistance based on different perspectives is performed:

Depending on the duration of the effort:
• Resistance of short duration.
• Resistance of medium duration.
• Resistance of long duration.

Depending on the prevailing energy system:
• Aerobic resistance
• Lactican aerobic resistance.
• Alactic anaerobic resistance.

Depending on the relationship established with other physical qualities:
• Resistance to the strength.
• Resistance to speed.

Depending on how involved the muscles:
• Static resistance.
• Dynamic resistance.

Depending on the level of specificity to the sport practiced:
• General resistance.
• Specific resistance.

Now we explain another type of resistance clasification changing terminology. Briefly we can observe the following scheme, which will be explained below:

1 Resistance General: Are endurance activities that have little or no relation to the specific technical gestures and decision-making with the sport. Mainly it will help us to reduce recovery time to fatigue.

2nd Specific Resistance: Are endurance activities that relate with the proper technique for each sport and basic game concepts used in the formative stages or the most advanced tactical concepts applied in high performance stage. In this taxonomy specific resistance different categories are established.

Resistance in the tecnique: Resistance activities with basic technical elements of the game and automated by the player with non specific making decisions. Its main objective is to train the technique in different stages of fatigue.
The conditional structure is characterized by enhancing and insist on demonstrations of more characteristic of team sports in particular resistance.

Resistance with decision-making: Resistance activities with technical elements and specific decision making system of team play. The conditional structure of this section is limited to the physical characteristics of game system, combining the different energy systems.

Playing resistance:Are real and reduced exercise game. For example: 3x3, 2x2.

Methods for endurance training

Continuous method (there are no pauses between effort):
- Harmonic Continuous
- Variable Continuous (with possible variations).

Fractional method (there are pauses between efforts):
-Intervalic: (pauses always incomplete) Very short, short, medium and very short.
-Intermittent: short

Control method (Competition)
-Official matches
-Training matches with rivals higher, lower or the same quality
-Situations with changes in regulation

Now that we know some methods to improve this basic physical quality come the most complicated, apply and track it.

See you in the next post! Greetings!

¡Saludos!

Specific Strength

The requirement of strength in sports, is the basis of the physical preparation, but does not serve any manifestation of force, but that the goal of the training should be the improvement of the (functional) useful force, which note the informational aspects, opposition from opponents and the collaboration of the partners.

The explosive strength is required, since the demands of practice seek to efforts of high intensity and short duration, that are takes on added significance in the outcome of the game. But, it is secure on the other hand, to repeat them with the same level of success as many times as necessary in the course of the match, so it also requires resistance to force. Physical preparation should allow improve the effectiveness of each of the actions (jump higher, get faster, launch more strong...). Bodybuilding is what allows develop this explosive, therefore, it is necessary to seek and increase the momentum and speed in a single action.

The improvement of explosive force occurs when more force is applied in less time at a same resistance. Do not confuse it fast or explosive force with the speed of the movement. The explosive force can be maximum at any speed and any load.

Classification of the demonstrations of force in handball:
Displacement: Through movements the player occupies or creates the play areas that are the key to all tactical problems, both in attack and in defense. They require a high level of strength in the lower limbs and pelvic waist, so acceleration, braking and direction changes are effective.

Hops: In handball, the jump is a priority in the relevant actions of the game both in attack (releases on jump and suspension, feints) as in defense (locking). Jump exercises have a very important influence on the characteristic of the handball technical force, from movements until the goalkeeper stops and situations of opposition and physical contact.

Releases: Release is the last game gesture. All engine parts that occur in handball are the means used to find a location of release. It requires a high level of explosive force.

Situations of physical opposite-contact (struggle): handball occurs in quite a few situations in which two or more players fight for the possession of a space, resulting in physical contact between them. These actions of opposition need high levels of overall strength, both to maintain a won position as in the interacton the occupation of the desired space.

Given the characteristics of the handball, fitness work will be based on the improvement of explosive force, with incidence of the maximum force, directed to demonstrations of force displacement, jump, launch and fight.

To develop explosive force or power.

Muscle contraction must be carried out with maximum speed and low weight. Force and speed come together to get an explosive movement. Then we propose guidelines for working in this capacity.

Weight or overload:
a) With body weight (Multihop, impulses, etc.)
b) With light overloads. Weighted belts, rubber bands, medicine balls, weighted vests, etc. are used)
Repetitions: 6 to 10.
Series: 4-6.
Recuperation: 3 min.
Observations: the movement should be performed at maximum speed.

We hope that you served help!

At the end of the text, we leave an article of Paco Seirul·lo, physical trainer of handball.

b) Con ligeras sobrecargas. Se utilizan chalecos lastrados, cinturones lastrados, gomas elásticas, balones medicinales, etc.)
• Repeticiones: 6 a 10.
• Series: 4 a 6.
